Perpetual Motion Devices
Perpetual motion is basically a machine or device that outputs more energy then it takes in. The concept of perpetual motion means the device will work "forever" or until the parts wear out. Once put into motion the perpetual motion device will work on it`s own without any outside input of energy or fuel. In other words the perpetual motion machine requires no batteries, no fuel, and no energy to make it work.
Among scientists the argument is that perpetual motion violates the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics, and or both. Devices which comply with both the first and second laws of thermodynamics but access energy from outside sources are sometimes referred to as perpetual motion machines, although they don`t completely fall in line with the standard definition of a perpetual motion machine.
Even though scientists and many machinists and engineers believe that perpetual motion devices defy the laws of physics, there are many people that still choose to pursue perpetual motion technology. Many backyard hobbyists and backyard scientists disagree with mainstream science, and they continue to work at building a perpetual motion machine. The reason why people keep persisting at this invention is because it would be an incredible device that could produce "Free Energy".
If perpetual motion machines were around, we could build cars that would power themselves, we could create factories that would require no fossil fuels. Perpetual motion devices are the ultimate machine, and that is why so many people refuse to believe mainstream scientists, some people believe that it can be done with the right ingenuity.
There are some machines which appear to violate the laws of thermodynamics, but in reality they aren't. Take Cox's timepiece for example. It has been designed to run on the differences in barometric pressure or temperature between night and day. A machines like this has a source of energy, even though it is one which is not readily apparent so it only seems to violate the laws of thermodynamics.

Perpetual motion is the invention of the future. Hopefully someone will produce a device that is commercially viable soon, so that we can do away with fossil fuels and pollution.
